How To Extend The Life Of Your Washing Machine

Your washing machine is one of the hardest-working appliances in your home. From daily laundry loads to heavy bedding and towels, it handles a lot of wear over the years. With a few simple maintenance habits, you can keep your washer running efficiently, reduce repair costs, and extend its lifespan by several years.

Don’t Overload the Machine

Overloading places extra strain on the motor, suspension, and drum bearings. While it may seem like a time-saver, consistently washing oversized loads can lead to premature wear and costly repairs. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended load capacity for the best performance.

Use the Right Amount of Detergent

Using too much detergent doesn’t make clothes cleaner. Instead, it creates excess residue that builds up inside the drum, hoses, and detergent drawer. This buildup can cause unpleasant odors, reduce washing efficiency, and eventually damage internal components.

Clean the Drum Regularly

Soap scum, dirt, and bacteria naturally accumulate inside the drum over time. Run an empty hot wash once a month using a washing machine cleaner or white vinegar to remove residue and eliminate unwanted smells.

Inspect the Door Seal

The rubber gasket around the door can trap moisture, lint, and small objects. Wipe it clean after every few washes and check for signs of mold or damage. Keeping the seal clean helps prevent leaks and unpleasant odors.

Clean the Filter

Many homeowners forget about the drain filter until the washer stops draining properly. Clean the filter every few months to remove lint, hair, coins, and other debris that can block water flow and affect performance.

Leave the Door Open After Washing

After each cycle, leave the washer door slightly open for a few hours. This allows moisture to escape, preventing mold, mildew, and unpleasant smells from developing inside the drum.
